Web Development

We prefer to use UNIX-based operating systems as the servers for our projects. This includes Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Solaris/SunOS, IRIX and several other variants of the UNIX platform. One might wonder why we prefer not to deal with Microsoft Windows based servers. The fact of the matter is that they are not as robust as UNIX servers when it comes to being an Internet webpage server. One may also wonder why we are not afraid to use the "free" operating systems. Once again, the fact is that the freely developed open source OSes are well maintained and updated much more often than the closed source OSes are.

Cost is another major factor. If free software can do a better job than software that costs you several thousand dollars, it's all the better for our clients' budgets.

When it comes to web serving software, we prefer to stay with the undisputed leader: Apache. This is another open source software package that runs over half of the web servers in the world. We prefer it to everything else because of the large number of plug-ins that it supports (including PHP), the speed of the server, and the configurability. By making PHP an Apache plug-in, all the scripting code executes much faster than if it was run as a CGI (Common Gateway Interface) program. The price of this software is also a nice bonus: it's free!
